REVERSING DECLINE: VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND EDUCATION FOR A HIGHLY SKILLED WORKFORCE
Tuesday 24th April, 12.30pm-1.30pm
Rt Hon Robert Halfon MP, Chair, Education Select Committee
Andrew Lewer MP, Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee
Dr Sheila Lawlor, Director, Politeia and author of the forthcoming publication
Vocational education and the training of young people has for decades been the Cinderella of the system, often the object of piecemeal and haphazard changes to courses, qualifications and apprenticeships.
Today it is at the heart of UK policy to equip students to take their place in the highly skilled labour market that the UK must develop to compete in the global economy. A new system of ‘T’(technical) levels will run parallel with ‘A-levels’ for 16-19 year olds and business-led apprenticeships designed by leading firms. But is this country yet on the right track?
On Tuesday 24th April, Politeia will hold a special event to consider these measures, and whether further changes are needed. The event will also take up the themes in Vocational Training and Education for a Highly Skilled Workforce, by Politeia’s director, Sheila Lawlor, to be published by Politeia and the Brussels think tank, New Direction.
