Deepak Lal was an economist and latterly James S. Coleman Professor of International Development Studies at the University of California and Professor Emeritus of Political Economy at University College London. He was also a consultant to the International Labour Organisation, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, the World Bank and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. He was a member of the UK Shadow Chancellor's Council of Economic Advisors from 2000-9 and author of numerous publications, including War or Peace: The Struggle for Power (2018). He was a member of Politeia's Academic Advisory Council, for which his publications included Taxing Matters: Moving the UK from Predator State to Global Economy (2007) and EMU and Globalization (1999).
